The World Bank, Mapped. Country Selected: Mozambique.

http://geo.worldbank.org/

This site allowed us to select Mozambique on the world map and chose from one of the tabs that popped up: “Overview, Data, News, Projects, Visit Us.”  Using the Data tab we were able to examine numerous statistics and build our own data report based on the facts provided.  Furthermore, the links displayed under the News and Projects tabs were also very useful as portals to mine further research.

Rural Poverty in Mozambique.

http://www.ruralpovertyportal.org/english/regions/africa/moz/index.htm, Used all page-links related to Mozambique.

This site, sponsored by the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), provides information about poverty in Mozambique that is more focused on conditions in rural regions of the country.  One link off the homepage link (provided above) was particularly insightful. We were able to listen to Mozambiquians comment on their living situations and how developments have impacted their standard of living over time.  We were able to use these firsthand accounts to build out a more introspective analysis of rural poverty in Mozambique.

Our Common Interest: Report of the Commission for Africa, Chapter 2 (Pages 101-120)

http://www.commissionforafrica.org/english/report/thereport/english/11-03-05_cr_chapter_2.pdf, 2005.

The chapter that was used in this report, published in 2005, is entitled “Lost Decades: Legacy and Causes.”  The text and accompanying charts and maps were helpful in determining the causes of poverty not just in Africa, but on a global scale.  Following an explanation of each cause were numerous charts and statistics that added validity and substance to the argument.  We used information from this source to develop the “Drivers” section of our global poverty brochure.  It should be noted that although this information was extremely helpful, it took much effort to discern which causes were actually drivers of poverty and not effects of its existence.

World Hunger and Poverty - Global Issues.

http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Poverty/Hunger.asp

World Hunger and Poverty - Global Issues is a site dedicated to solving global poverty by addressing all of the issues that contribute to the problem.  The main focus of the site is on hunger's impact on poverty.  The site has many useful facts that help illustrate the problems of poverty and hunger, as well as suggested solutions.  Though the focus is on hunger, the site doesn't skimp on information about the many other drivers that allow poverty to continue.

IMF Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers.

http://www.imf.org/external/np/prsp/prsp.asp

The International Monetary Fund plays a large role in fighting global poverty.  This site is a tremendous resource with links to country-specific strategy papers on reducing poverty.  In addition to the strategy papers, there are often country-specific progress reports dated back several years, which allowed our group to track the country's progress throughout several years.  Also, economic and social development plans are available for some countries.

World Hunger and Poverty: How They Fit Together.

http://www.bread.org/learn/hunger-basics/hunger-facts-international.html

Although this site is primarily dedicated to the problem of hunger, this specific page on bread.org details the important links between hunger and global poverty.  The site has many useful facts that illustrate not only the problems of global hunger and poverty, but also how they are intrinsically linked.  This helped us distinguish between the causes and effects of poverty, which are often difficult to distinguish, as poverty is often viewed as perpetual series of causes and effects.  In addition, there are other resources listed at the bottom of the page that can lead to further research and information.

UN Millennium Development Goals.

http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/

The 8 MDG’s were created by the nations of the UN in an effort to accomplish a unified set of goals by 2015.  These goals work towards solving social justice, poverty, equality, etc issues plaguing the planet.  This source provided links to documents that further developed the intentions of the MDG goals and outlined progress that has been made in fulfilling them.  These goals and related sources guided our group in understanding what the current state of poverty is today and what’s being done to change the most pressing issues.

“Ways to Give” by World Vision.

http://donate.wvus.org/OA_HTML/xxwvibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10020

This source contributed to the Global Poverty brochure’s section “How can you help?”  As a crucial part of ending poverty, our group recognized the need for public action.  That said, we provided our audience with resources on how they could get involved and contribute to the fight against global poverty.  This site, in particular, gives people an opportunity to financially support the cause of their choice, from medicine supply to water sanitation.

Human Trafficking in Mozambique: Root Causes and Recommendations. UNESCO 2006.

http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0014/001478/147846e.pdf

In this document, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization describes their research on the culture of the poorest 67% of Mozambique.  While the document focuses primarily on the trafficking of women and children, it also provides insight to poverty within the country.   Trafficking is especially detrimental in Mozambique as it is the country of origin for this trade.   UNESCO notes that poverty is the principle driving force behind trafficking.

Childhood Poverty in Mozambique: A  Situation and Trends Analysis. UNICEF 2006.

http://www.unicef.org/media/files/Final_SITAN_English_summary.pdf

This document focuses on the root causes and trends of poverty in Mozambique and how poverty has affected children.   The document provides a development context for understanding the causes of poverty, statistics for measuring poverty over time, and reasons why children are the most vulnerable in Mozambique.  This document was most helpful for recognizing deprivation-based indicators for Mozambique and analyzing the poverty trends.
